Indulgences for the Holy Souls in November
November is dedicated to the Holy Souls. Traditionally, from November 1 to November 8, inclusive, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls in Purgatory, is granted to those who visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed, provided that the usual conditions are met. Only one plenary indulgence may be granted each day. Additionally, on All Souls Day, a plenary indulgence for Poor Souls will be granted to those who visit any parish church or public oratory and there recite one Our Father and one Credo. A cemetery visit is not required. The Holy See has extended the period in which these indulgences may be obtained. Once again in 2021, one may obtain these indulgence on any day during the month of November. The usual conditions to acquire a plenary indulgence are sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion, prayer for the intention of the Holy Father, and detachment from sin, even venial sin. If these conditions are not met, the indulgence will be partial. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domini, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescant in pace. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them soon.
